      Frequently Asked Questions

How does Urine Testing System™ work?

The patient collects the urine in the UTS Tube™. A healthcare professional then connects the patented push-fit UTS-10 Cap™ to the UTS Tube™ containing the urine sample.

This assembled UTS Module™ is inverted, exposing the reagent pads to the urine sample and then loaded into the UTS Digital Analyser™ for digital analysis – using reflectance photometry to take readings at automatically-timed intervals.

Digital results are displayed on the UTS Digital Analyser™ and the UTS Desktop Software™ – and can be saved into the patient’s electronic health record.

Please refer to the Instructions for Use and tutorials for product training.

What does the UTS-10 Cap™ test for?

UTS-10 Cap™ is a patented single-use cap containing the reagent pads to test ten parameters: Leukocytes, Nitrite, Urobilinogen, Protein, pH, Blood, Specific Gravity, Ketone, Bilirubin and Glucose.

Does the patient take and connect the UTS-10 Cap™?

The patient collects the sample in a UTS Tube™ and seals it with a lid. The push-fit UTS-10 Cap™ is then connected to the UTS Tube™ by the healthcare professional.

This action ruptures the watertight seal in the lid and allows the urine sample to pass into the testing chamber in the UTS-10 Cap™ and interact with the chemical reagent pads. The sample remains isolated from the tester.

Can you save results into patient’s electronic health record?

When the UTS Digital Analyser™ is connected to a computer via USB, you can review the digital results on the UTS Desktop Software™ and save the results into the patient’s electronic health record – creating standardised data input for easy auditing.

What training is required to operate Urine Testing System™?

Urine Testing System™ requires minimal training and healthcare professionals can begin using it almost immediately. You will have access to a library of short video tutorials as well as Instructions for Use. Test results must be interpreted by a qualified healthcare professional.

Does the UTS-10 Cap™ contaminate the urine sample before it arrives at the laboratory?

No, the UTS-10 Cap™ design incorporates a locking mechanism that separates the urine sample from the reagent pads for safe transport.

How is Urine Testing System™ calibrated?

In order to maintain the performance of UTS Digital Analyser™ an annual calibration check will be required every 12 months following the registration of the device – for which there will be a fee. We will provide a reminder and details approximately 30 days in advance.

How do you clean the UTS Digital Analyser™?

Inside the bottom section of the UTS Digital Analyser™ there is a plastic insert which can be removed for cleaning at least daily. Ensure that the plastic insert is replaced before re-commencing testing of samples. Non-abrasive agents and methods that are normally used in clinical areas are appropriate for cleaning the insert and the external parts of the UTS Digital Analyser™.

What is the battery life of UTS Digital Analyser™?

UTS Digital Analyser™ will last 1 – 2 weeks without a charge dependant on usage and is recharged via USB cable to any computer or USB wall charger.

      Is boric acid toxic?

The substance/mixture in the boric tablets contains no components considered to be either persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT), or very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB) at levels of 0.1% or higher. The substance is no different toxicity-wise to the boric powder you will be used to seeing in standard boric / red top tubes.

Where does boric acid need to be stored?

There are no specific storage requirements for boric acid tablets. There is no need to refrigerate the tablets which can be stored at room temperature. Practices are advised to adhere to their local guidance for storage of equipment.

How do we get the boric acid into the tube?

There are 100 tablets per container. One tablet provides the correct amount of boric acid for a sample which is filled to line marked on the UTS Tube™. Please wear gloves to dispense the tablet into the UTS Tube™ by hand.

What happens if I forget to put boric acid in?

Boric acid is only required in some circumstances for samples being sent for microbiology analysis. If boric acid is not added, it may not allow for accurate further analysis. Please check with your usual protocol on boric samples.

How many boric tablets should I use per sample?

One boric tablet should be used per urine sample filled to the indicator line on the UTS Tube™.

      Which tests require boric acid?

It depends on your local pathology laboratory specifications, but often if samples are required to go for microbiology analysis, they require boric acid. Standard testing requires the original sample to be transferred to a separate boric acid or ‘red top’ tube.

How will the laboratory know the sample contains boric / needs to go to Microbiology?

We provide red stickers that should be placed on the top of the UTS-10 Cap™ once the boric acid tablet has been added. This will indicate to the laboratory that boric acid is present.

Does boric acid have a shelf life?

Our boric acid tablets have a shelf-life of 24 months. The expiry date will be clearly indicated on the base of the tablet container.

How much will the boric acid tablets cost?

Boric tablets come in containers of 100 tablets. Each container costs £5.99 which includes 100 red sticker labels to identify the sample for laboratory sorting.

Isn’t adding a boric tablet more complicated than the existing method?

We developed a ‘tablet-add’ system to eradicate the need to decant samples; reducing mess, and the number of items that go into clinical waste. This means the sample can remain in the original tube- simply removing the cap to insert tablet – if boric is required.

Will my pathology department / laboratory accept the new tubes and caps?

We will notify your local laboratory before you start using Urine Testing System™

UTS Tubes™ are designed to fit standard laboratory racking.
